The Farm
|
Stevens Farm is located in the picturesque Winterbourne valley. Nestled on top of the valley is the 110 acres of grassland that makes up Stevens farm where the Barnes family has farmed for over 30 years.
Three generations of the Barnes family, Edward Barnes, his son Norman and his grandson, Christopher run the farm.
With a large and growing family' it became apparent that under the current agricultural environment it would not be possible to sustain all the family with the traditional dairy unit that was in existence. Having already expanded into Farmers markets in 2000 it seemed the natural step to open our own farm shop.
As our family has grown, it became obvious that the traditional dairy would not be able to support us. Having already established a good presence in local Farmer's markets, it seemed logical to open our own farm shop as well.

The decision made, the dairy herd was sold in the autumn of 2003. The farm shop was subsequently opened on November the 11th 2005.
During the 2 years between selling the dairy herd and opening the shop we established a sulker herd of Aberdeen Angus and Hereford cattle ready to supply the shop and to continue the supply for the farmers market.
We sold the dairy herd in 2003 and established herds of Aberdeen Angus and Hereford beef cows ready to supply both the Farmer's markets and our own shop which opened for business in November 2005.
We now have an enviable reputation for supplying only the best cuts of quality beef as well as a wide range of meat products such as sausages and burgers.
We have also established our own herd of pigs to supply us with pork. We run a mixture of Large White and Landrace pigs to which we have recently added Oxford Sandy Blacks.
We are also in the process of re-establishing our flock of sheep and are looking to use local breeds such as the Dorset Horn and Dorset poll.

With the opening of the shop, we also saw an opportunity to try and educate the public about farming and farm animals. As part of this, we have established our farm Animal Corner, which is free to all to come and browse and ask questions.
When we opened the shop, we also saw an opportunity to inform the public about farming and farm animals. As a part of this process, we created the Animal Corner, which is free to all to come and browse and ask questions about the breeds and how they are cared for.
We are also planning to have regular open days throughout school holidays and charity events to raise awareness and money for the chosen cause.
The Farm Animal corner was opened shortly after the shop opened as a complementary attraction that would act as both an attraction for families with children interested in the animals and provided an educational experience to those who visited. Click the image above to meet the animals and keep up to date with all new and pending arrivals.
